STORY : ‘Dandupalyam 2’ is the sequel to 2012 thriller ‘Dandupalyam’ that chronicled the life and exploitations of the scandalous D-gang. ‘Dandupalya 2’ offers a whole new perspective to the already established story, making one question everything they already know.

REVIEW : The first instalment of the film sets the tone for the sequel. Now a dreaded gang, the D-gang members, consisting of Kempi (Pooja Gandhi) and Krishna (Makarand Deshpande), are behind bars, reinstating again and again to anyone who is willing to believe that they are innocent. But no one does except for crime reporter Abhivyakthi (Sruthi), who is keen on exploring the possibility of their innocence.

Picking up after five years where the first film left, the sequel is set in an alternate reality. While the first film framed the D-gang for the horrific crimes, the sequel tries to untie the knots, one by one. ‘Dandupalyam 2’ creates a whole new set of questions and eludes the answers that were popping up in the audience’s heads.

This dark, gritty and uncomfortable movie isn’t definitely one for the faint-hearted. We must give it to Arjun Janya and Venkat Prasad for their background score and cinematography respectively which manages to make a viewer feel as suffocated as the protagonists in the film. While Pooja, Makarand and Sanjjanaa excel in their roles, it’s P Ravi Shankar who leaves a lasting impression as Inspector Chalapathi. The religious references made in the film seem redundant and the movie could’ve done without a lot of the scenes in the second half. Not to mention, the driving forces behind the events in it seem forced and contrived.

It is only in the last ten minutes that the movie picks pace and brings up the curiosity of the audiences to the hilt. The movie ends on a frustrating cliff-hanger, with a promise to reveal all the answers in the next outing. All in all ‘Dandupalyam 2’ is a necessary evil – a bridge between the first part and the inevitable third, which will hopefully answer the question if at all they are worth it.
